On arrival in Maun, you will meet your Wilderness Safaris representative and transfer by light aircraft to the Okavango Delta. Spend the next three nights at Vumbura Plains, a luxury camp located in the northern part of the Okavango Delta. Vumbura Plains comprises two separate seven-roomsatellite camps, each with its own uniquely-designed lounge and dining area tucked beneath a canopy of shady, indigenous trees. A star-gazing deck is set over the floodplain, a place to gaze upwards or simply enjoy the convivial campfire setting. Each large, luxurious room is raised off the ground, with indoor and outdoor shower and full en-suite bathroom. A step down is the lounge area, open on three sides for an iconic view of the floodplains. Each room also has a plunge pool and 'sala'. (D)
The annually flooded grasslands of the Okavango Delta surrounding Vumbura Plains are locally referred to as 'melapo' and offer good seasonal viewing of elephant, giraffe, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, common waterbuck and reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo. Hippo and crocodile are commonly found in the waterways. You may also have the chance to view predators including the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion, as well as leopard, cheetah and African wildcat. Birding here is exceptional all year round. Vumbura Plains offers both land and water based game viewing activities including game drives in open 4WD vehicles, night drives, mokoro and boating trips, fishing, birding, nature walks and cultural visits. After breakfast, fly by light aircraft to the Linyanti where you will spend the next three nights at Kings Pool premier camp. Named for Scandinavian royalty, Kings Pool overlooks the handsome oxbow-shaped Kings Pool Lagoon in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve bordering Chobe National Park. The camp’s nine luxurious tents each boast a large bedroom area and lounge leading out onto a veranda with a private plunge pool and thatched sala from which to soak up the gorgeous views and possibly even spot elephant crossing the channel. The spacious en-suite bathrooms have double showers and hand-basins, as well as an outdoor shower for those who wish to shower ‘in’ nature! The spacious main area comprises a lounge, dining room and a convivial bar beautifully set on expansive raised decks. There is also a pool and an open-air 'kgotla' for evening dining under the stars. The Linyanti Wildlife Reserve has abundant wildlife in a wide variety of species, but is most noted for its very large elephant population which can reach enormous densities during the dry winter months. Other game is abundant, such as impala, lechwe, kudu, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and bushbuck, and their predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyena. Rarer species such as sable and roan antelope also emerge from the woodlands during the dry season. Birding is spectacular. Activities here are based around the Linyanti River and Savute Channel and include game drives, night drives, nature walks, hides, birding and seasonal barge cruising and fishing. (B)(L)(D)
