Make your way to the Rovos Lounge at Cape Town Station for a welcome reception prior to departure. The train will depart Cape Town at 11am. There is time to freshen up in your suite before joining other guests in the Lounge or Observation cars to relax into your first day on board.
Early evening there is a stop at Matjiesfontein where you may disembark for a stroll through this quaint and historic village.
Dinner is an elegant affair and is served in the Victorian dining car each evening. (L)(D)
Enjoy a leisurely morning on board the train before your excursion after lunch. Disembark at Kimberley Station and proceed for a tour of the city, the Big Hole and the Diamond Mine Museum. Soon after departing Kimberley a shallow lake appears on the left-hand side of the train where, on most occasions, there are spectacular flocks of lesser flamingos as you travel from the Karoo into the Highveld. The train will pull into Pretoria mid-morning where you can disembark and enjoy a walking tour of the station and locomotive workshops (weather permitting). This will be followed by lunch on the platform and a city tour.
Depart Pretoria late in the afternoon and continue towards Zeerust in the North West Province. (B)(L)(D)
Packing a small bag to take with you, disembark the train and be transferred by coach to Tau Game Lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve for a two night stay. Lunch will be served upon arrival at the lodge and in the afternoon you will head out on your first game drive with ‘sundowners’ en-route. Enjoy dinner at the lodge. (B)(L)(D)
Enjoy an early morning game drive on the reserve before returning to the lodge for breakfast. The day is spent at leisure enjoying the lodge facilities. You will head out again for an afternoon game drive with refreshments en-route. (B)(L)(D)
Another early morning game drive followed by breakfast at the lodge. You will then be transferred back to the train to continue your journey. Border formalities will take place as you cross to Botswana and Zimbabwe. (B)(L)(D)
Today is spent at leisure on board the train as it journeys towards your next destination. Lectures will be given during the course of the day by the on-board historian. The train passes Gwaai and Dete along one of Africa’s longest stretches of straight railway line – 114km – and along the eastern edge of the Hwange National Park where occasional sightings of animals can occur. The train heads for Thompson’s Junction for your overnight stop. (B)(L)(D)
Disembark from the train on arrival at Victoria Falls station with your overnight bag and assemble on the platform before walking down to the Victoria Falls Hotel, where you will stay tonight. This afternoon you will be taken to join a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. Light snacks and drinks will be served your cruise. Dinner tonight will be available at the hotel. (B)(L)(D)
The morning is at leisure in Victoria Falls. The following activities are available for your own account and may be arranged beforehand on the train or at the Victoria Falls Hotel - Tour of the Falls; Helicopter Flight over the Falls; Elephant Back Safaris; Walk with Lions; White-water Rafting & Bungi-jumping. Breakfast and lunch will be at the hotel.
In the afternoon you will meet on the station platform to depart Victoria Falls and cross the bridge to Livingstone. Dinner and overnight is on the train. (B)(L)(D)
Today is a day at leisure on board the train with lectures given by the on-board historian. The train travels across the Kafue railway bridge – a 477-metre long steel girder truss bridge of 13 spans each at 33 metres supported on concrete piers – towards Kapiri Mposhi and the start of the TAZARA railway line. Enjoy another day at leisure on the train and listen to the lectures given by the on-board historian as the train passes through Serenje and Mpika to Kasama. (B)(L)(D)
Disembark the train at Kasama for a morning excursion to Chisimba Falls, returning in time for lunch in the dining cars. During the afternoon, the train climbs the escarpment to the Tanzanian border and the highland valley of Mbeya – the 'Scotland of Africa'. (B)(L)(D)
Arrive at Makambako in the morning where you can enjoy a stroll through the town – time permitting. The day is then spent at leisure on the train while descending into the Rift Valley and through the Udzungwa Mountains; negotiating tunnels, switchbacks and viaducts of the escarpment en-route to Selous Game Reserve. After breakfast, enjoy a game visit in the Selous Reserve (time permitting), before travelling on towards Gwata for your overnight stop. (B)(L)(D)
The train departs Gwata and travels in an easterly direction towards the coast as you enjoy your final breakfast on board. Arrive in Dar es Salaam mid-morning where your train journey ends. (B)
