Japan is a popular bucket list destination, but many people don’t realise there’s more to see and do than Tokyo, Mount Fuji and Kyoto. So, what are some of the off-the-beaten track sites you should explore? We uncover six picturesque destinations that are a perfect mix of culture, history and picturesque beauty.

Himeji Castle

Himeji castle is also known as “White Heron Castle” and once you see it you’ll see why! Located in Himeji, Hyōgo, it is one of the best surviving examples of Japanese castle architecture. This castle dates back to 1333 where it was initially built as a fort and evolved to its current state in 1609. As one of Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage sites, it has also recently had restorations done to restore it to its brilliant white colour.

Fushimi Inari Shrine

The path leading to Fushimi Inari’s Inner Shrine is lined with around 10,000 torii (traditional Japanese gates) making it one of the most striking paths in the world. The Kyoto shrine is dedicated to the God of Rice and is rich with history, with the oldest shrine dating back to 711AD. Don’t miss out on one of Japan’s most important shrines and most iconic walks.

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Another spot in Kyoto to visit is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Its paths are lined with dense, towering green bamboo, making it a lovely break from the built-up cities and also the perfect spot to snap a few photos. Often overlooked in Kyoto, it is definitely something to see for its sheer green beauty.

Kōyasan (Mount Kōya)

Kōyasan is home to many sacred sites and pilgrimage routes for Japanese Shingon Buddhism. For those who love hiking there are beautiful forest pilgrimage walks lined with signposts. For those who’d prefer not to experience the long walk, the area and some of its key sites are accessible by drive. You’re also able to experience an overnight stay at temple lodging and get a taste of the monk lifestyle

Ashikaga Flower Park

Ashikaga Flower Park is located around a two-hour drive or train ride from Tokyo and is worth a day trip. Among the beautiful park’s 350 wisteria trees stands one of the largest wisteria trees in the world, aged over 150 years. Around mid-April to mid-May the park lights up at night to give visitors a unique and magical experience among the azaleas, peonies and flowering wisterias. Walk underneath their supported branches and feel like you’re walking in a dream.

Itsukushima Shrine

This shrine can be found on an island off the shore of Hiroshima and is best known for its “floating” torii gate.  The Shrine complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Japanese Government has even designated several of the buildings and possessions in the complex as national treasures.  During high tide, the main Torii gate appears to be floating enchantedly.
