The Road less Travelled
With 5000km of scenic, well-maintained highways and roads, the Yukon
is a road-trippers dream. Explore iconic drives, from the historic Alaska Highway to the Dempster Highway across the Arctic Circle, along the way marvelling at the jaw-dropping scenery and wildlife.
Once called ‘the biggest and hardest job since the Panama Canal’, the construction of the
Alaska Highway between March and October 1942 took a workforce of 16,000. Built to link the
US Mainland with Alaska, the highway starts in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and travels
through the Yukon to Delta Junction in Alaska. Originally 2700km in length, today it is 2232km
due to road rerouting and straightening over the years. The Alaska Highway is one of the most
iconic drives in the world and 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of its construction.
This spectacular mountain route takes travellers on a grand journey through picturesque Yukon towns and alpine passes to the Alaska Panhandle. Journey from Whitehorse to Skagway in Alaska through the scenic White Pass, ride the ferry to Haines and circle back to the Yukon through Kluane country.
Canada’s only all-weather roadacross the Arctic Circle is among the world’s most unique driving
routes. With services at both ends and one lone outpost in the middle at Eagle Plains, motoring this unpaved two-lane highway is a true adventure. The isolation and variable conditions can prove challenging, but the abundant wildlife, easy access to tundra and the expansive views are unmatched.
