Day 1


Arrive in Reykjavik today and collect your rental car at the airport. Perhaps enjoy a dip at the renowned Blue Lagoon where you can relax in the geothermal waters (admission not included). Set off along the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula to your first stop on your self-drive adventure, the charming village of Hveragerdi. The village is located directly on top of a geothermal area and is known for its many greenhouses heated by hot water from the nearby springs. Take the time to explore some of the many outdoor and wellness activities to be found here, and discover some of the unique local cuisine, even including courses baked in an outdoor geothermal oven!

Day 2


Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before driving along Iceland's famous Ring Road to the south shore. Stop en route to explore Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, and the nearby hot springs and boiling mud pools before heading onwards to the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls and the black sand beaches of Iceland's south shore at Dyrholaey. Overnight tonight at the village of Vik. (B)

Day 3


After breakfast this morning continue your journey along the Ring Road. You'll cross Eldhraun, the largets lava flow recorded on the planet in historical times and visit the former site of a 12th Century Catholic convent in Kirkjubaejarklauster town. Discover the stunning glacial area within Vatnajokull National Park and visit the birthplace of icebergs at Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon. Overnight tonight in the Hofn area.

Day 4


After breakfast this morning drive through Almannaskard Pass, stopping to admire the majestic coastline. Marvel at the magnificent East Fjords, where towering mountains plunge vertically into the sea, passing through charming village en route before reaching Egilsstadir, which is your stop for the night. The town of Egilsstadir is said to be home to a legendary friendly monster, and its location near Iceland's largest forest makes it popular for its locally sourced cuisine and the Wilderness Centre, where you can enjoy the interactive exhibits. Day 5

Lake Myvatn

Following breakfast, set off to explore the vast emptiness of the highland desert plateau of Modrudalsoraefi en route to the Lake Myvatn area. Stop at Dettifoss along the way to see Europe's largest and most powerful waterfall, continuing onwards to Namaskard Pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colours. You accommodation tonight will be in the Lake Myvatn area, giving you the perfect base to explore the natural beauty of the area including Skutustadir and the Laxa Salmon River. (B)

Day 6


Start the day with breakfast before exploring the lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Visit the magnificent Godafoss waterfall, before taking the time to discover the colourful town of Akureyri with its charming buildings and views of the Eyjafjordur Fjord. Enjoy the breathtaking drive along mountain roads with spectacular views of the black sand coastline and Arctic Sea across the Troll Peninsula. Tonight, stay overnight in the town of Siglufjordur, home to some of the finest timber buildings in the country, beautifully restored to their original glory. Visit the award-winning Herring-era Museum which reacreates the atmosphere of the early 20th century when the town was transformed into a frontier boom town due to a large migration of herring. (B)

Day 7


This morning, set off after breakfast along majestic mountains and narrow passes to Skagafjordur, one of the finest places in Iceland for horse breeding. Learn more about Icelandic horses at the Icelandic Horse History Exhibit at Holar University College. Holar College is a cultural centre with buildings from nine centuries of Icelandic history you can visit. Continue onwards to the village of Blonduos, with its Seal Centre, and perhaps join a guided excursion to look for seals. Spend the night in the beautiful town of Borgarnes tonight. (B)

Day 8


Spend the morning after breakfast exploring the Krauma Hot Spring Spa, a great place to stop and enjoy a refreshing morning bath surrounded by gorgeous landscapes. drive onwards to Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland's largest lake, stopping to admire the Hraunfossar waterfalls along the way. The UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site at Lake Thingvallavatn is where the world's oldest continuing parliamentary government was founded in the 10th century and the place where the North American and European tectonic plates meet. Head for your final stop in Reykjavik. (B)

Day 9


Enjoy breakfast this morning before departure to the airport. (B)
