Previously part of South Sumatra, Bangka and neighbouring Belitung now form one island province. The best beaches are to be found on the north east side of the island, ideal for swimming or just lazing around on the beach. (B)(L)(D)
Belitung sits off the east coast of Sumatra.
Although less high profile than Bali or
Lombok, Belitung is blessed with some of the
best beaches in the country. (B)(L)(D)
The name Pulau Seribu means “a thousand islands”, and the area consists of about 128 little islands located in the Bay of Jakarta in the Java Sea. (B)(L)(D)
Located on the northern coast of Java, Jakarta has rapidly expanded through the years, absorbing many villages in the process. Jakarta is not only the seat of national and provincial government; it is also Indonesia’s political centre and a hub for finance and trade. (B)(L)(D)
The stunning offshore archipelago of Karimunjawa is a marine nature reserve and national park consisting of 27 coral fringed islands – only five of which are inhabited. The white sandy beaches are sublime, the swimming is wonderful and the pace of life is wonderfully relaxed. (B)(L)(D)
Semarang is now a commercial port and more of a business hub than a city for tourists. It is the gateway the world famous Borobudur Buddhist monument. (B)(L)(D)
To the south of Madura lies the small island of Giligenteng, a community of four peaceful little fishing villages where everybody knows each other. This tranquil spot is covered by a barrier of mangrove and shelters a wide variety of wildlife and marine species. (B)(L)(D)
Probolinggo is a port town whose main activity is fishing. It is also the nearest town of any size to the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park on the east coast of Java, and a stopping point on the way to the Gunung Bromo volcano. (B)(L)(D)
North of Bali, the Lovina tourist area stretches over 12km and consists of a string of coastal villages. Lovina’s black sandy beaches are lovely, the sea is very calm here and safe for swimming. (B)(L)(D)
Lombok is located east of Bali and is known for its wild natural landscapes and authenticity, making it well worth a visit. (B)(L)(D)
