On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. In the evening visit the local seafood market and sample some local cuisine. (D)
Drive to the traditional Dusun village of Tambatuon located in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu for a glimpse of village life and overnight stay. In the afternoon, explore the village surrounds and let local residents explain some typical activities. Dinner will be in the village, cooked by a local family. (B)(L)(D)
This morning leave Tambatuon by foot for the first day of trekking (about 6 hours) to Tanak Nabalu Homestay in Lobong Lobong village. Today’s trek will take you through rice paddies, farmland and jungle trails with Mount Kinabalu as the backdrop. After dinner at your homestay, see a cultural show by local villagers. (B)(L)(D)
This morning after a trail safety briefing you begin about 6 hours of trekking towards Kinabalu, firstly through plantations and farmed areas and then into forest. There will be views of Mt Kinabalu from some of the ridges. There are steep slopes and two river crossings on this section of track. Tonight will be spent at a simple jungle camp. (B)(L)(D)
After breakfast at the jungle camp continue walking to our lunch stop. After lunch we transfer to a vehicle for the short drive to Kinabalu Park Headquarters where we settle in for the evening. (B)(L)(D)
After an early breakfast you will register for the climb and meet your mountain guide, who will accompany you to Timpohon Gate. Here, commence your slow climb of 5-6 hours to the overnight resthouse of Laban Rata, at 3,270 metres. Dinner will be a simple buffet at Laban Rata Guesthouse. (B)(L)(D)
Prepare for a very early wake up call at about 01:30am to begin your final ascent of Mt Kinabalu. The goal is to reach Low’s Peak for sunrise by 05:45. After enjoying sunrise from over 4,000 metres, return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast. Afterwards, begin your slow descent and after a late lunch at park headquarters, return to Kota Kinabalu by vehicle. (B)(L)(D)
This morning transfer to the airport for your onward travel. (B)
NOTE: This itinerary includes basic accommodation in villages (dormitory-style with shared bathroom) and a jungle camp. A high level of physical fitness is essential for climbing Mt Kinabalu – there are steep sections and a final climb in the dark.
