A clear expression of the passion Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck felt on his 1940 respite from writing, collecting biological specimens in the Sea of Cortés. You will be met at the Los Cabos International Airport and transferred to Un-Cruise’s San José del Cabo hospitality area. Joined by your expedition team, an overland orientation transfer to La Paz acquaints you with the dramatic Baja landscape and the week that lies ahead. The captain and crew welcome you aboard just in time for a cocktail and dinner with your new mates.
Wildlife and exploration top your agenda. Don flippers and search for marine life below the surface. Keep your binoculars poised for Blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans, frigate birds, tropic birds, and cormorants perched above, and your eyes peeled for pods of dolphins, blue, fin, or sperm whales as they spout and dive in the glittering sea. Depending on the time of year, you’ll have a chance to either swim with whale sharks—the largest known species of fish in the ocean—in Bahía de La Paz, or, if the gray whales have arrived in Magdalena Bay to calve, travel overland to the Pacific coast and observe them in the lagoon from a panga. At Bahía Agua Verde, experience “real Baja” on a burro ride with a local ranchero family; snorkel with playful, agile sea lion pups at craggy Los Islotes; kayak along sandy beaches and hike red-rock outcroppings at Isla Partida and Isla San Francisco. In a setting straight out of a movie set, Isla Espíritu Santo’s idyllic bays offer some of the best kayaking, with time for beachcombing along a shell-strewn shore or hiking inland among exotic cacti. Desert landscapes and volcanic ridges are your backdrop for days of skiffing, hiking, kayaking, and paddle boarding, and by night—stargazing and watching the water for magical luminescence. Wrap up the week with a Farewell Dinner. (B)(L)(D)
