Day 1


On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2


Today visit the Gandan Monastery, the seat of Buddhism in Mongolia and one of the few Ulaanbataar monasteries to survive the Stalinist purges of the 1930s.  See the magnificent statue of Migjid Janraisig, “the lord who looks in every direction.”  Also visit the National Museum for an excellent overview of Mongolia’s history and culture, and the Zanabazar Fine Arts Museum, one of the best collections of Buddhist art and artifacts in the world. Strroll through Sukhbaatar Square and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (B)(L)(D)

Day 3

Ulaanbaatar - Lake Hovsgol

Fly north to Murun, the capital of Hovsgol Province, and continue overland to Lake Hovsgol. Enjoy your first experience of the Mongolian steppe and forest.   Bird life and wildflowers abound, and there will be ample opportunity to discover the lake’s secrets in the following days. Overnight at a ger camp. (B)(L)(D)

Day 4

Lake Hovsgol

Begin the horse trek into the forested peaks of the Khoridal Saridag Mountains. Bordering the western shore of Lake Hovsgol, the mountains offer spectacular views of the lake and surrounding forests. Overnight in a comfortable camp. (B)(L)(D)

Day 5

Lake Hovsgol

After breakfast, return by horse to the base camp and enjoy an afternoon of kayaking on Lake Hovsgol using expedition kayaks. Return to camp in the late afternoon. (B)(L)(D)

Day 6

Lake Hovsgol - Ulaanbaatar

Return to Murun for the afternoon flight to Ulaanbaatar. Stop along the way at Lake Irkh, a small pristine lake in the midst of the steppe that attracts a variety of birds. Afternoon at leisure in Ulaanbataar. (B)(L)

Day 7

Ulaanbaatar - Gobi Desert

This morning we fly over vast steppes to the Gobi, Mongolia’s southernmost province of semi-arid desert. This is a fascinating and diverse region, with a variety of wildlife including Bactrian camels, mountain sheep, gazelle, eagles and falcons. Take a hike through the Yol Valley National Park, observing wildlife and superb landscapes, before driving to eco-lodge located near Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. (B)(L)(D)

Day 8

Gobi Desert

After breakfast head to Tugrigiin Shiree, and explore  this white-sandstone escarpment and nearby sand dunes. Later drive to the Havtsgait Petroglyphs, home to hundreds of stone carvings from the Bronze Age. (B)(L)(D)

Day 9

Gobi Desert

Begin the day with a drive to Moltsog Els, one of the few regions of the Gobi covered by sand dunes. Continue to the legendary Flaming Cliffs, where the first nest of dinosaur eggs the world had ever seen was found. The ancient rock formations of the Flaming Cliffs are rich with fossils, and paleontological expeditions continue to make significant discoveries at this site. (B)(L)(D)

Day 10

Gobi Desert - Ulaanbaatar

Today we fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival, visit Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum, then spend the afternoon at leisure with your guide or independently. In the evening enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at your hotel. (B)(L)(D)

Day 11


After breakfast, transfer to the airport for departure. (B)
