Arrive in Anchorage and check-in to your hotel. Anchorage offers a blend of big-city amenities and natural wonders just a short drive from downtown. Learn more about Native cultures at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, a 10-hectare complex with exhibits and performances of traditional arts.
Pick up your car and explore Alaska's largest city. Take a walk along the Coastal Trail, drive to Chugach State Park or enjoy a hike on one of the many trails surrounding Anchorage.
Your drive to Seward takes you along scenic Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm. Recommended stops along the route include the aerial tram up Mount Alyeska, the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Just before you reach Seward, you have a chance to visit Exit Glacier, one of the few glaciers that visitors can walk to.
Enjoy a full-day cruise into one of Alaska's treasures, Kenai Fjords National Park. Watch for sea lions, harbour seals and humpback whales and see magnificent alpine, cirque, piedmont, and tidewater glaciers. A stop will be made at either Holgate Glacier or Aialik Glacier to watch for glacier calving – when ice chunks fall off the glacier. (L)
Travel back up the Seward Highway, through the lush Matanuska Valley, and onto the breathtaking Glenn Highway, one of the oldest and most scenic highways in Alaska.
Drive to the small town of Chitina, where you will leave your rental car and board a bush plane for the scenic flight into Wrangell-St Elias National Park. The largest national park in the United States, this spectacular park includes four mountain ranges, nine of the country's 16 highest peaks, and extensive ice fields.
Take a step back in time today on a historical tour of Kennicott, an early 20th-century copper mining town, for a glimpse into what it was like to live and work in this remote wilderness. This afternoon, you have plenty of time to add on an optional guided glacier hike.
Return to Chitina by bush plane this morning and continue driving north, following the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline. Stop at a number of historic roadhouses and scenic viewpoints along the way before arriving in the historic gold mining town of Fairbanks. Now Alaska's second-largest city, Fairbanks is known as the 'Hub of the Interior' and a popular stop for dog mushing and viewing the Northern Lights.
Enjoy a day at leisure in Fairbanks. You may wish to add an optional visit to Alaska’s Arctic or the Gates of the Arctic National Park.
Depart aboard the Alaska Railroad to Denali National Park before an afternoon wildlife bus tour through Denali National Park to Kantishna. Learn about the history, wildlife, and geology of the park and look out for moose, bears, wolves and caribou. Spend the night at the lodge in Denali National Park.
Spend the day exploring Denali National Park. Enjoy a guided hike, gold panning, mountain biking through the backcountry, or choose to add an optional bush plane flight.
Depart by bus back to the park entrance before your afternoon Alaska Railroad journey to Anchorage on the Denali Star.
Enjoy a bear viewing adventure to Katmai National Park or Lake Clark National Park. Spend the day on the lookout for bears, viewing from observation platforms or lakeside areas.
