Arrive at Vladivostok Airport, where you are met and transferred to your hotel. This evening enjoy a special Welcome Dinner including selected international wines . Closed to foreigners between 1930 and 1992, Vladivostok has a remarkable history, and our touring today will include a visit to a preserved World War Two submarine, the iconic suspension bridge over Golden Horn Bay, and a champagne reception at Vladivostok Railway Station as we board our train. Our journey today follows the Shilka and Amur rivers, close to the Chinese border. Enjoy Russia at its most beautiful and remote, as the landscape unfolds outside your window. You may also attend one of the absorbing lectures or Russian language lessons. For those who like to socialise, the Bar Lounge Car is the perfect place to enjoy a chat with your fellow passengers. Our Trans-Siberian adventure takes us into Mongolia and its capital, Ulaan Baatar. Visit Gandan Monastery, housing a community of over 500 monks, and Chinggis Square with its central monument to Genghis Khan. Drive to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and enjoy the beautiful scenery of wild Mongolia, visit a traditional Ger . (There is also an option to visit the National Museum and Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum, for those who don’t want to venture into the countryside). (B)(L)(D)
The ethnic and cultural diversity of Ulan Ude, the capital of the Buryat Republic, offers a unique insight into its heritage. During our exploration of the Old Believers’ Village we learn about their culture and history as we are treated to a concert featuring local folk singing. (B)(L)(D)
Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world which holds 20 per cent of the world’s freshwater. For five hours we wind our way through tunnels and along cliff-hugging tracks. Our train will be hauled by a Soviet-era steam locomotive on this section of line. Weather permitting, we stop in a picturesque location for photographs and a swim for the very brave! Travel by boat to Listvyanka, and visit the Lake Baikal Museum and Aquarium where you can learn about the flora and fauna of the lake. Enjoy a delicious barbecue on the shore of Lake Baikal to complete a memorable day. (B)(L)(D)
Our visit to Irkutsk, the ‘Paris of Siberia’, takes in the most significant sites and museums in this fascinating city, including an exploration of the classic wooden architecture with its intricately carved lace-like decorations. We also visit the Volkonsky House Museum, dedicated to the memory of the aristocrats who were exiled to this remote outpost in the 1820s. We recreate the atmosphere of that time with a champagne reception and private concert. There is also the option to learn to cook some traditional Russian dishes, or visit a Russian Dacha (summer house) to get an insight into the everyday life of a Russian family. (B)(L)(D)

A modern ‘Soviet’ city on the banks of the River Ob, we experience the life and character of Novosibirsk’s rich culture , including the imposing Opera House and time permitting, the excellent Railway Museum. (B)(L)(D)
Founded in 1723 by Peter the Great, Yekaterinburg is the capital of the Urals and the meeting point of Europe and Asia. Our city tour takes us to the poignant site where Tsar Nicholas II was executed in 1918. We will also drive to the geographical border and drink a glass of champagne with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia. Time permitting, you may choose either a visit to the recently opened Museum of Military Machinery, or the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Centre, dedicated to the contemporary political history of Russia. Situated on the River Volga, the picturesque and historic city of Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan. Explore the Kremlin Fortress, including its stunning mosque and picture-perfect onion-domed cathedral, and later enjoy a performance honouring Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938), the city’s famous opera singer. Our touring programme of Russia’s capital takes us to the grandeur of the Kremlin – the spiritual, historical and political heart of Moscow – and to a private viewing of the Armoury Chamber. Visit Red Square, with its ornate St Basil’s Cathedral and GUM department store. Lunch at Café Pushkin, serving traditional Russian cuisine with an early 19th century décor, and tour the opulent Moscow metro and its showpieces of Socialist art.
