Welcome to Portland, a city that blooms with world-class culture, food and attractions.
Drive east to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, where verdant mountainsides and waterfalls meet the Columbia River. Your final stop of the day is Pendleton, home of the annual Pendleton Round-Up rodeo.
Discover stunning vistas and dramatic canyons on the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. Take a detour to Wallowa Lake, a glacier carved lake surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Wallowa Mountains. (B)
Make your way to Baker City, a former gold rush boomtown. Just outside the town, the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center helps visitors imagine walking the Oregon Trail, a 3,219 kilometre pioneer route. (B)
Head west to the Painted Hills Unit, where barren hillsides look brushed with eyecatching hues, from ochre and blazing yellow to green. On the way to the outdoor mecca of Bend, stop at Smith Rock State Park, a destination for rock climbers ready to conquer the 244 metre cliffs rising above the lazy Crooked River.
Follow the Cascade Mountains south as you head toward Crater Lake National Park. The lake was formed 7700 years ago, when a volcanic peak erupted then collapsed. The remaining caldera filled with water, creating the deep azure-blue lake you see today. Just south of Medford is the cultural centre of Ashland, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. (B)
Head north to the Willamette Valley through Grants Pass, the starting point for adventures on the Rogue River. Make your way to Eugene, a vibrant college town that’s home to the University of Oregon.
Head west to the Oregon Coast, and then travel north. Florence is the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, a 20 hectare expanse of oceanfront sand dunes. The southern half is open to dune buggies and dirt bikes, while the northern dunes are reserved for wildlife. Drive north to Newport, an active commercial fishing hub.
Head north to the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center, a great place to see one of the thousands of whales that pass by each year. Then stop in Lincoln City, where you can learn to blow glass at the Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio. You can’t miss Cannon Beach’s iconic Haystack Rock. End your day in Astoria, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.
Drive to nearby Fort Clatsop, the spot where Western explorers Lewis and Clark wintered over with their expedition in 1805. Then head inland to Portland. (B)
Spend the day in Portland, a vibrant city inhabited by eco-conscious residents who ride bikes everywhere. Get a taste for the food scene at some of the more than 500 food carts. Since you’re in ‘Beervana’, don’t miss taprooms at some of the city’s more than 50 craft breweries.
Your journey ends this morning.
